The onset of allergies, also known as allergic rhinitis or hay fever, can occur in children as young as 2 to 3 years of age.

Symptoms of allergies vary from virus infections and other infections:

Itchy eyes tend to associate more with allergies than colds.

The fluid nasal drip due to allergies tends to remain transparent.

Fever or hoarse voice are not symptoms of allergies.

Many children with allergies have parents or siblings who have allergies.

Outdoor Allergies

Symptoms of allergies appear outside in the spring, when trees, grasses and flowers produce pollen, and this irritating spreads through the air. The pollen attaches to mast cells lining the nose and lungs. Then, mast cells release histamine, which causes allergy symptoms such as congestion, sneezing, itchy eyes and runny nose.

Some strategies to foreign control allergies include:

Close the window of the bedroom of her son.

Bathe and wash your child’s hair every night.

When your child to play outside, do not let them wear clothes more than once before washing.

Indoor allergies

Symptoms of indoor allergies, which appear throughout the year, are often the same as those caused by allergies outside, with a telling difference: the presence of congestion in the mornings due to exposure to dust mites during night.

Indoor allergies can appear in an earlier stage of life of children, perhaps 2 years old. Dust mites, cockroaches, mold and pet dander are common irritants inside. These microscopic particles can be found almost anywhere, even in a clean house!

To limit exposure of children to these allergens:

Restrict the areas covered with carpet in the house, the allergens are difficult to remove from carpets.

Keep the mattress and box spring of your child’s bed covered with a zippered vinyl pouch to prevent exposure to dust mites.

Replace curtains with blinds.

Remove stuffed toys from your child’s bed or wash them frequently.

Use an air purifier with a filter retainer particles, high-efficiency (HEPA).

Bathe your dog weekly or cat. Keep pets out of the bedroom of her son.

Treatment of allergies

The counter antihistamines are effective in treating symptoms of allergies. However, many antihistamines have a sedating effect. Consult your pediatrician to ensure that an antihistamine is appropriate and determine the correct dose according to the age of your child. If symptoms occur daily, ask your pediatrician for a prescription non-sedating drugs or nasal steroids.

A child with this severe allergic reactions may benefit from allergy testing to identify specific antigens, or substances that can trigger an allergic reaction. During an allergy test, place a small plastic device in your child’s back, and tests are done simultaneously with multiple antigens, such as pet dander, dust mites and pollen. If after 15 minutes reaction occurs, the child is allergic to that particular allergen. When nasal allergies are worse, it is possible that children are more prone to asthma. Therefore, the diagnosis and appropriate treatment are very important.
